Project Description:

The towns of the Gold Rush had colorful names, and each one could probably “tell” a story about how it got its name. However, since almost all are ghost towns now, it is difficult to find out how they got their names.

Choose one of the town names from the list given in class (or make up your own town name) and create a story about how it got its name. The story can be humorous or serious. It will be pure fiction, so make it as wild as the West was in 1849!

Project Directions:

1. Choose a name for your Gold Rush town.

2. Find at least 2 web sites with information on the Gold Rush. Use these web sites to help you get ideas for your story.

3. Compose a story about how your Gold Rush town got its name. It should be at least 3 paragraphs written in your own words.  Be sure to include:

      • Name of the town
      • Date founded
      • Who named the town
      • Why they chose the name
      • Other details of interest

4. Insert the picture that you drew at home or in class of your town.  (We'll scan these, so write your name and the name of your town on the back, not the front).

5. Provide links to the online resources you used to complete this assignment.

6. Include the date and an email link to your class email at the bottom of your web page.
