OUR
MISSION FOR FOURTH GRADE: DISCOVERY
Here
is what's in store this year :
In
Social Studies, we are beginning our study of California's history by exploring
the Golden State's regions and geographical features. How many places in
California have you been? We will focus consecutively on the first Californians,
life on a mission, the Gold Rush, and the development of the railroad in California.
The study of our great state will culminate with our highly anticipated trip to
Sacramento in May.
Take a look at our 2006-2007 Gold Rush Town web pages.
Our
Language Arts program is literature based. To start the year, we will be
reading a novel called Island of the Blue Dolphins. This compliments
our study of California Native Americans and is linked to our Social Studies curriculum.
Throughout the year 4th grade will continue to study novels and develop units
and activities that are designed to enhance our critical thinking and writing
skills.
Geometry
is our first topic of investigation for math in our Everyday Mathematics series. Look around, how many geometric figures can you see in your home
right now? This curriculum focuses on problem-solving and logical
thinking, as well as consistently reviewing basic math skills. Organizing
Data, Decimals, Fractions, Percents, and Probability are just a few of the concepts
taught in 4th grade.
For
handwriting this year, cursive is our big focus. As we continue to develop
our cursive handwriting, we will also be practicing our keyboarding skills.
Speaking of computers, after the success of 2002-2003's pilot program with the
Technology department, we now have received eight wireless laptops to use in our
classrooms.
As the year progresses, we will continue to update our webpage with the latest
news from fourth grade. If you would like to contact us, please use the
