Our third graders
have a lot of heart! Third
grade is a wonderful and exciting year! At Village School, third grade is a bridge
between the primary grades and the upper school. Throughout the school year, we
focus on the values of responsibility and best effort, as well as the academic
subjects of writing, reading, math, and social studies. Read
our book reviews to find a great new book! |
 | Literature:
Our
reading program consists of chapter books, literature circles, and short genres
such as historical fiction, tall tales, and legends. During the year,
we read The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes, Charlie and
the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, and Owl in the Shower by
Jean Craighead George. | | Social
Studies: Our
social studies program is very fun and exciting because all our units feature
hands-on activities such as making covered wagons, tipis, talking sticks, weaving
looms, and a build-your-own-business craft fair at the end of the school year.
As part of our social studies curriculum, we participate in a field trip where
we learn how to live like the Native Americans whom we study extensively.
|
 | Math:
Our
math program is Everyday Math, which emphasizes math skills and how they
relate to our daily lives. In third grade, we study multiplication, division,
place value, geometry, and fractions. |
 | Writing:
Our
writing program emphasizes both creativity and grammar rules through our Writer’s
Workshops. Students write stories based on a theme such as mysteries, biographies,
or personal experiences. After writing the story, each student edits, revises,
and finally publishes his or her work at our publishing parties. In our writing program we will emphasize setting,
character, and how to write key events in paragraph form. We will also introduce
strategies for developing a good story. Some projects include:
- Creating a character and writing their biography
- Writing
an autobiography
- Writing a mystery
Book
report writing is always done in the same manner as our Writer's Workshop stories,
including descriptions of settings, characters, and key events!
